I’ve got to write a quick one here about Texas Joe’s as I’ve been raving about his BBQ smoked food on twitter for the last few weeks. He does the best BBQ I’ve ever tasted and yes, I’ve been to Texas…
For those of you only rocking a few brain cells, Joe is his name and yep he is a Texan through and through; stetson donning, cow boy boot wearing 100% thoroughbred Texan.
I do love slow cooked cow. I’ve confessed this many times before, my love for all things beefy cooked low and slow. Though I don’t always get to cook over flames on a BBQ so I’ve been doing my best to track down London’s best BBQ joints. Look no further, I’ve found it.
On a Sunday afternoon I went to Texas Joe’s takeaway joint which adjoins The Horatia Pub on Holloway Road. Joe was standing by the counter, stetson laid perfectly on his head, thumb in jeans and we starting talking BBQ.
Joe explained he only uses salt, pepper, high quality meat and oak logs to smoke his meat, ‘the proper way’. He told me he is a purist when it comes to smoke and meat.
He is an easy going fella with a good sense of humor and after a few jokes between us I knew I had heard that infectious laugh before, high pitched with an air of genuine happyness to it. After some Googling I realised he was on Dragons Den pitching his equally excellent beef jerky.
I ordered a huge beef rib and paid by the weight (the pub next door does meals for a set price)
Amazing beef rib. I going to repeat this several time – the best BBQ smoked beef rib I’ve ever had.
The next week we decided to go to the Horatia and order a good deal of the menu and what followed was a challenge to eat.
Smoked Jalapenos stuffed with cheese and brisket, wrapped in smoked bacon.
Brisket with BBQ beans slaw and pickled gherkin
Joe sent me the below pictures of one of his briskets, whole and freshly cut. You can see the meat falling out of itself and screaming Eat me, Eat Me – thanks for the pictures Joe
Fries, the Works; Cheese, Chilli Beef brisket and chopped pork
The fries were overflowing with meaty goodness and sticky cheese, more meat than veg here – the only way it should be!
Mac and Cheese
Overall this was brilliant, simply put, the best BBQ food I’ve ever had.
